What this conversion changes
JPEG cannot hold transparency, so any see-through area is filled with white before encoding rather than coming out black. The picture is re-compressed at quality 92, which is a second generation of loss on top of whatever the BMP already discarded.
Re-encoding does not carry EXIF across, so the camera settings and any location in the original are not written into the JPEG file. Keep the original if you need them. The decoder is the one your browser already carries, so nothing is downloaded to do this.
